tile is in!

You don’t know how happy it makes me to post this. Seems silly to get that excited about tile, but as you know we built the house as a blank canvas, and we’ve been living in that blank canvas for a while now. The space is beautiful and just like I expected, but completing some of the details makes it feel more like home.

Tile is a super fun material. It is like painting your walls with ceramic, and that is how we approached it. Originally, I was thinking about using the tile as color accents, but we found the starkness of black and white so beautiful, we changed our minds halfway through. Let’s take a look at the results.

kitchen

Originally, I wanted a stainless steel backsplash. When designing, I’ll admit, function often wins out over form for me – especially in the kitchen. Stainless is durable and professional, but can look a bit clinical. Three major discoveries changed my mind here and led to the decision to go for tile on the kitchen backsplash. 1. I’ve seen what the salt air does to stainless. It is not invincible and will probably be good for a while, but will eventually bloom with little rust spots. 2. Custom stainless backsplash is expensive. Like, much more expensive than I anticipated. 3. We found this amazing tile at Home Depot. SOLD.

This is Gaudi inspired hexagonal tile that spoke to us the minute we both saw it. I’m loving the matte black treatment with the fun patterned texture. A black grout (of course you can do that, right?) and an asymmetrical edge makes it even more fun.

dining/living room

If you’ve been following the blog, you’ve seen a mock-up of the trippy tile we were putting in the living room. They did a fantastic job, and I’m super happy with it! I can’t wait to see it in person.

you can see a little of the dining room rug in the foreground

We also got the second bedroom tile installed. I’ll post a picture of that when I get back down to see it. Woo!
