welcome to expat living in baja california sur!

… but wait, I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. 5 years ago in our late 30’s, my husband and I decided to start thinking about what retirement could be for us. We don’t have kids and weren’t planning on having them. Watching the cost of living in the Bay Area grow at an astonishing rate, we couldn’t see ourselves making enough money to live here comfortably for the rest of our lives.

These thoughts, compounded with the stresses of corporate life (especially for a woman in tech), pushed the idea to the forefront. If I don’t stop this, will I grow a tumor? Was early retirement possible and when could we do it? What would that look like?

Flash forward to the present, my husband is living in Pescadero, BCS and getting started on our house while I remain in Oakland, California bolstering up our savings so I can go join him early next year. It’s been a wild ride thus far, and I decided to start blog about the journey thinking that I might be able to provide some insight, or at least one perspective on what it takes to do this.

If this sounds interesting to you and you continue to read this blog, here is a preview of a few stories and subjects you can look forward to in the near term:

  • This seems crazy, why did we do this?
  • Why Baja California Sur?
  • “Buying” property in Mexico
  • Planning an exit strategy
  • Now I’m regretting the decision to live a year apart
  • Let’s build a house in Baja! That sounds fun and not challenging at all!
  • Building passive income

I’m excited to share this journey and hope you get some insight and inspiration from it. Let’s just fu*#ing do this!
