to-do list

with 2 Comments

I know I just posted about my retirement transition last week, and guess what? Plans have already changed a bit. Looks like I’ll be retiring a bit sooner than I thought. My company is backfilling my position with someone who is currently on my team, so the transition doesn’t need to be as long. We’re still working out an end date, but it looks like I’ll be gainfully unemployed by the first week in April! I’m thrilled!

But this post isn’t about that. It is to answer the most common question I get from people when they hear I am retiring so young – what on earth are you going to do when you retire? Personally, I think this question is hilarious and my snarky answer is usually “what am I not going to do?”

Putting snark aside for a moment, since I am so close now and it is fun, I’ve decided to document a list and share it with all of you:

  • Travel
  • Explore remote Baja without a time limit
  • Learn Spanish fluently
  • Then learn conversational Italian and Thai
  • Help out in our community – I need fluent Spanish for this, but I’m excited to serve
  • Do a through hike to the other side of the Baja peninsula
  • Art – I have a fine arts degree but haven’t practiced regularly since I started working
  • Get a regular yoga practice going
  • Learn to dive
  • Perfect some form of pastry
  • Create a local, wild sourdough starter and make bread out of it
  • Learn more about ancient Mayan culture
  • Oodles of house projects – this is truly neverending
  • Master (or some level of mastery) of the ukulele
  • Finish that song I’ve been writing for several years
  • Learn salsa (the dance not the food)
  • Post in my blog every week
  • Learn to format bullets properly in WordPress (haha)
  • Go fishing more
  • Finally go see the whales during breeding season
  • Throw an annual event at our house
  • Learn more about the historical food of Mexico
  • Learn the difference between the different agaves in Mezcal so I can ID them by flavor
  • Take a day each week to do whatever the fuck I want and not feel bad about it

This list isn’t exhaustive, but you get the picture… boredom will not be a problem for me!

Congratulations! It sounds you are going to be busier than you are working. All fun items. I will take some of your ideas for myself when the time comes for me to retire. Thank you!
