down to the bedrock

It has been a bit since I last posted, but a flurry of activity has been going on at the build site. We have officially started pouring the foundation. Below are some pictures of the prep for that. The foundation will be on the bedrock, but the actual floor of the house will be much higher than the ground – roughly at the top of the re-bar in the pictures below.

The build is really progressing quickly, and I have to say it is a relief to have daily noticeable progress. We’ve had to make one concession which is to build the walls of the pool so we don’t have to buy as much dirt for inside the retaining wall. Our builder thought he could get a deal (we’re buying 90 loads of dirt!!!), but they aren’t budging on price, so we’re getting creative. What that means is that we’ll have to pay for something I would consider a pure luxury (pool) before the house is built.

Personally, we are surviving – especially thanks to a little last minute trip I made the other weekend. Apparently, we have found the limit of acceptable separation which turns out to be one month. At that point, we both start getting hives. Luckily, I’ll be flying down the day after Thanksgiving for a weeklong trip, then Switch will be flying back up with me for a couple weeks in the Bay Area followed by a road trip through the NW to visit friends and family. Now for the pictures!
