ch-ch-ch-changes, part 3

with No Comments

As I pack for a quick weekend trip down to Pescadero (yay!), I’ll post the third installment in my series chronicling the changes I expect to encounter when moving to Mexico:

Transportation

Being in a dense, urban city means having many forms of transportation available. Walking has always been a favorite of mine, but I’ve been taking advantage of a lot of different methods lately. Subway, bus, shuttle and bike are in my normal rotation and Lyft, boat/ferry and other people’s cars are less frequent but common.

Living down south will be a whole new remote existence. We’re less than 2 kilometers from “town”, but in Pescadero, the roads are notorious for their lack of pavement and washboards. Our Toyota FJ Cruiser is great for off-road driving, but it is currently our only vehicle and I’m assuming we won’t always be doing the same thing together. Bike could be possible, but would be unpleasant enough (washboards) that I’m not considering it at the moment. I’ll need something to transport me short, bumpy distances to town.

For these quick trips, I’m thinking it makes sense to get an ATV or something small that is off-road and stable. You also see locals driving dune-buggy type vehicles and it seems to work out. My husband has talked about building an electric vehicle of some sort, maybe we’ll play around with converting something small to electric.
